Things are only going to get worse from here.Created by a core team of just three (with additional contractors), it’s not surprising to learn Endnight has a VFX background, sharing credits in films like TRON:Legacy and 300, as that pedigree has clearly informed the visual design of this lush world. The next time you come to, you’re alone, in the smoldering wreckage of the plane, surrounded by a beautifully dense open-world inhabited by ‘mutants’ who are perhaps a little too human. In development at indie studio Endnight Games and released as a publicly available alpha, The Forest is a PC-exclusive open-world survival horror game that takes inspiration from hits like DayZ, Minecraft and Far Cry, but also looks to carve its own niche a goal that’s readily apparent from the first few moments, when the commercial airliner you’re on drops out of the sky, and you awake to see a semi-naked humanoid scoop up your unconscious son and walk off into the forest with him. I huddle back beside the fire, and pray that I survive the night.

The blows connect, killing her and forcing the others to run away, screaming. Spotting one out of the corner of my eye I wildly swing my weapon. As the sun begins to set I light my fire, grip my axe and listen out for the crunches of leaves, the snapping of twigs or the faint whispers that signal the approach of nocturnal mutants.
